Integration of high resolution spatial and spectral data acquisition systems to provide complementary datasets for cultural heritage applications

International audience; Modern optical measuring systems are able to record objects with high spatial and spectral precision. The acquisition of spatial data is possible with resolutions of a few hundredths of a millimeter using active projection-based camera systems, while spectral data can be obtained using filter-based multispectral camera systems that can capture surface spectral reflectance with high spatial resolution. The application protocol impacts the effectiveness of biocides against lichens

Abstract This work analyzed the influence of different application protocols on the efficacy of two biocides against the foliose lichen Xanthoparmelia tinctina on the sandstones of the Roman Archaeological site of Luni (Italy). The hypotheses that (a) biocide application tools (brush vs. poultice), (b) pre-treatment hydration, and (c) post-treatment washing may affect devitalization success were verified by monitoring chlorophyll a fluorescence of thalli, both in situ and in laboratory conditions. A specific operative protocol set up during the restoration of the Grammichele slate slab

This work deals with the conservation of a slate slab, representing the map of Grammichele, a small town in the hinterland of South Eastern Sicily. The slab was engraved and painted in 1693, just after the tremendous earthquake that distroyed most of the towns in that area. The conservation process is illustrated through three steps: i) archive research; ii) physical chemical analysis of constitutive materials and degradation products; iii) planning and carrying out of the restoration and conservation operations.

New biocides based on imidazolinium-functionalised hybrid mesoporous silica nanoparticles

Here, we report the development of a new biocide based on hybrid mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN). The MSN was synthesized by condensation method in emulsion followed by grafting with two different silylated ionic liquid moieties, namely butyl imidazolinium bromide and imidazolinium propansulfonate betaine. Features of nanoparticles were characterized by Thermogravimetry, Infrared and ss-NMR Spectroscopy, and Transmission Electron Microscopy. Abstract Pore-space properties, such as pore-size distribution and connected porosity, are relevant factors in the evaluation of the performance of a consolidation treatment. In this study, two different techniques – Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Relaxometry (NMRR) – were adopted to study the compatibility and the efficacy of a new consolidation product for limestones.
